Dr. Sameer Islam is a West Texas native growing up in Odessa, TX. For his entire career, he’s balanced a love of working with patients and an obsession with cutting-edge scientific developments that are changing the way we see digestive health, and medicine as a whole.
His favorite aspect of being a doctor is making his patients feel better. That process begins by being able to provide answers to his patients. He realizes that most people are frustrated by the health care system due to the lack of an actual answers patients receive regarding their health problems.
As a functional gastroenterologist, he is able to provide patients with more treatment options than those offered by traditional Western Medicine.
Patient Care Philosophy
- My goal is to tell you what you have. So many people are unclear as to the cause of their symptoms and I want to give you clarity on what you have.
- Next, I want to come up with a plan WITH you to get you feeling better. Too many doctors just TELL their patients what to do – I want to work WITH you on a plan to feel better.
- Since I am a functional GI doctor, we have the options of lifestyle and diet treatment coupled with medical treatment. We are not just limited by one or the other.
I want to provide the BEST customer service to you as I can. I want you to be WOW’ed.

Functional Gastroenterologist
Functional Gastroenterologist may be a new term to many. It’s basically a holistic approach to practicing medicine that extends past traditional Western Medicine and exclusively using a prescription pad to treat medical conditions.
A functional gastroenterologist is a proponent of first determining the cause of the issue and educating the patient on their condition. Then a treatment regimen will be developed using natural therapies, medicine or combination of both.
As a Functional GI doctor, his goal is to get your OFF of your medications when possible.
Patient Appointments
Dr. Islam reviews each patients’ records prior to their appointment so that he knows what to focus on. If there is a referring doctor, he will communicate with them to ensure everyone is on the same page. Also, he sends them an email prior to their first visit introducing himself and setting expectations for the upcoming appointment.
He prides himself on being present when speaking to patients and being a great listener. This is paramount, since collectively potentially life-changing decisions relative to a patient’s health are going to made. Dr. Islam feels these decisions are best made when patients get their questions answered and are properly educated on their heath condition.
I WANT you to ask me questions. Ask me as many questions as you want – there are no dumb questions. I am here for you.
